the Colony, the anniversary of the Queen's Birthday occurred, which it is usual to celebrate by an entertainment to the principal people of the Colony. - It also happened that the Governor-General of the Philippine Islands with his suite arrived, and it was of course requisite to show him and his staff a certain degree of attention; and, under these circumstances, I am induced to ask your Lordship if it would be proper that some allowance should be made to the Lieutenant-Governor from the public funds for the extra expenses to which he has been subjected.
Had my absence not exceeded ... my means, I should not have troubled your Lordship on the subject, but it having been much longer protracted for a period than had been anticipated; or is likely has induced every ... to secure again, me to refer this question for Your Lordship's consideration.
Your Lordship will observe that I have caused this letter to be recorded Separate, as the application I have made in favor of General Staveley, is totally unknown to that officer.
